How Do I Know I've Found The One?

One of the questions I'm asked most often during bridal appointments is, "Will I just know when I've found the one?" Brides often imagine they'll have a huge moment... tears streaming down their face, their family crying, music playing in the background, and an overwhelming certainty that this is the dress.

And sometimes, that does happen. But just as often, if not more often, it doesn't. If you're worried that you haven't had that magical movie moment, I want to reassure you that you're absolutely not alone.

Finding your wedding dress isn't always about one dramatic moment. More often than not, it's a process of elimination (sounds so boring I know, but stay with me). It's about trying different silhouettes, fabrics and styles, learning what you love (and what you don't), and comparing how each dress makes you feel. Because that's what it really comes down to: how you feel. That's the one piece of advice I try to impart to all of my brides: really tune in to how each dress makes you feel, and let that be your guide.

Every wedding dress tells a slightly different story. One might make you feel elegant, another confident, another romantic or effortlessly modern. As you work your way through your appointment, you'll naturally start comparing those feelings. Before long, you'll notice that one dress keeps creeping back into your mind.

Sometimes, finding your dress is loud and emotional. Sometimes, it's quiet. It might simply feel... right. You may not cry. You may not have butterflies. You may just stand in front of the mirror, smile to yourself and think, "I don't want to take this one off." And that is every bit as special.

At Your Story Bridal, I've learned that every bride experiences this moment differently, and there is no right or wrong way to find your dress. Some of the happiest brides I've worked with didn't cry at all. They simply found a dress that made them feel like the very best version of themselves. One of my favourite things to watch is what happens after a bride has put on the dress. The conversation changes. Suddenly we're no longer talking about necklines or fabrics. Instead, she starts imagining the whole picture.

"This would look amazing at our venue."

"I can picture this with my flowers."

"My bridesmaids' dresses will look so lovely next to this."

Without even realising it, she's already planning her wedding around that dress. Even more importantly, she changes. Her shoulders relax. She smiles more naturally. She stands a little taller. There's a calm confidence that wasn't there before. She starts looking at herself with kindness rather than criticism. The little insecurities that were there at the start of the appointment fade into the background, and instead she begins to see herself as a bride. It's one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

So if you're waiting for fireworks, don't put pressure on yourself to have them.

Your moment might be full of happy tears, or it might be quiet, calm and deeply personal. Both are completely valid. The most important thing is to listen to that feeling.

When you find yourself smiling without thinking...

When you keep comparing every other dress back to one...

When you can't stop picturing yourself walking down the aisle...

When you simply feel comfortable, confident and like you...

Lean into it.

Because more often than not, that's exactly what finding "the one" feels like.
